Sweet Bobbie was one of the stray cats we always leave food for at the kitchen door so they don't have to go hungry. When he first started coming around at about 1-2 years of age, he was anything but sweet. He truly looked like a kitty without a home; his fur was a mess, he had a fungus on his skin with sores all over, he was bleeding from his ear because of an ear inection, and he was super skinny. He beat up all of our cats in the yard whenever he could get his claws on and into them because he did not know any better; all his life he had had to fight for survival. He had such an angry looking face all the time, and he would not let anybody touch him. We had to get a hold of this kitty so we could help him feel better. We ended up trapping him so we could take him to the vet to get help. The vet told us that Bobbie would eventually become our sweetest cat, and even though we did not believe him at the time it eventually turned out to be true.
It was our kitty Moccasin who first made friends with Bobbie when he came to live inside the house. He taught him how to play and out of all our cats he was the only one to show him any kindness during the first few months; everybody else hated him because Bobbie wanted to be boss. That did not sit very well with Happy at all who was the king of the household. But Moccasin and Bobbie became good friends and little by little Bobbie became softer and part of the family. Over time, he lost that angry look, healed his body and became exactly what the vet had predicted-the sweetest, most attached and most gratefull kitty of them all. His second best friend was Cowboy who he often hung out with.
Because he had such a poor start in life, Bobbie's immune system was never the strongest. At just 9 years of age, he developed a fungus that settled in his knee joint and spread to the brain from there. He suffered a seizure, became blind within seconds, and we could not save him. He is now buried in our back yard next to his friend Cowboy. We are grateful that we could make his life a little easier for the time he got to live with us, our sweet, sweet orange tabby.
